Vertical Bar Grip Tools

BUILD ELITE SUPPORT GRIP & OPEN HAND STRENGTH

Vertical Bars are one of the most honest tests of grip. Because the load hangs directly from the hand, you’re forced to develop true support strength, open-hand strength, thumb pad engagement and wrist stability. If you compete in grip sport, strongman, powerlifting or climb, a V-Bar quickly exposes weaknesses and converts them into PRs.

KEY BENEFITS OF V-BAR TRAINING

  • Max support grip: Teaches you to lock the hand, brace the wrist and resist rotation under heavy load.
  • Open-hand development: Thicker diameters demand more palm and thumb pad, not just finger “crush”.
  • Carryover to pulls: Improves deadlift hold, farmer’s walks, rows, pull-ups and stone loads.
  • Simple progression: Add plates to the loading pin = instant, measurable progress.

WHICH VERTICAL BAR IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

  • Standard (50 mm): Classic competition feel; best starting point for most athletes.
  • Mega (60 mm): A step up in thickness; shifts the challenge to open-hand support.
  • Ultra (76 mm): Big diameter for advanced open-hand strength and wrist control.
  • Omega (89 mm): Maximum thickness—brutal on thumb pad and palm; elite-level tool.
  • Square V-Bar: Hard edges increase bite and change contact points for a different stimulus.
  • Cone & Reverse Cone: Tapered shapes alter leverage and pull path—great variety for plateaus.

WHO WILL BENEFIT MOST?

  • Strongman & Powerlifting: Better bar holding power, quicker lockouts, fewer dropped reps.
  • Climbers & OCR: Improved open-hand endurance and wrist integrity on slopers/volumes.
  • Field Sports & Combat: Stronger grip under fatigue for tackles, ties and clinch control.

EXTRA TIPS

  • Use a quality loading pin and carabiner for consistent height and swing.
  • Powdered Chalk light and even; avoid over-chalking which can gloss the surface.
  • Keep the wrist neutral, elbow close, and engage lats to reduce spin.
  • Track 1RM pulls and timed holds to monitor both peak strength and endurance.

  • Technique constraint & consistency checks → Square.

By Diameter

  • Smaller (50 mm): higher numbers, best for PRs and competition standards.
  • Bigger (60–89 mm): harder to hold, builds open-hand support strength and wrist integrity.

GripLock™ Texture is a custom, ultra-grippy paint system designed for feel and durability. It holds chalk well and seasons over time to that perfect crust, helping to maximise performance.

We recommend using a light dusting of chalk on both your hands and grip tool, when used over time this will eventually develop the perfect seasoned feel and texture.

All equipment manufactured by Gods Of Grip is cleared for competition. You can view the complete list of competition lifts & rules here.

'Essential' equipment is not cleared for competition use.

We would usually recommend training support / open palm grip 1-2 times per week making sure to rotate between low / high rep sets and holds for time.

For more specific training tips & advice check out our Grip Academy.

Chalk - We strongly recommend not using liquid chalk with any of our grip tools, they are specifically desinged to be used with powdered chalk, liquid chalk will sit in GripLock™ texture and make the blocks feel worse.

Towelling - We do recommend brushing any excess chalk off with a towel frequently, this will allow for a consistent build up over time.

Brushing - You can brush the block to remove any excess or build up, this is not allowed mid competition (before or after is fine).

GripLock™ Texture - Our speciality paint is designed to season gradually over time through use, any paint chips are fine, these will just get filled with chalk / rust over time and provide you with an excellent textured feel.
