Our Strongman Axle Bar is manufactured in the UK from top quality steel tube. Axles are perfect for grip training, deadlifts and pressing.
Axle Bar Thickness
Our standard axle is 48mm / 60mm thick, this is considerably thicker than most standard Olympic bars which have a diameter of 28mm.
This provides a much tougher challenge to lift, you’ll feel the extra strain in your wrist forearms and biceps. The diameter of the Axle Bar forces your hand to keep slightly open during the lift. This helps to better engage your forearms and biceps, really helping develop muscle and strength. Working in a very similar way to Thick Grips, these are a good option to test out how you’d fare on an axle.
Axle Deadlifts
Using your Strongman Axle Bar is a great way to improve your grip strength whilst deadlifting. The diameter of the bar makes the lift much more challenging, especially without straps and knurling.
You’ll see in strongman competitions they usually cap out at around 350kg for 8 - 10 reps, this is with straps, without straps this would be a completely different story. The difficulty of the lift is increased due to the lack of whip in the axle bars, they are very still, providing very little movement, this makes the lift much more difficult, especially off the floor.
Axle Pressing
Requiring high levels of wrist strength, axle pressing is tough. The bars are hard to clean as you don't get a clean grip off the floor, most people counteract this by using a mixed grip to start. If you are using mixed grip during the clean, you’ll need to switch back to overhand during the mid phase. Once in position, the sheer diameter of the axle bar puts extra strain on the wrist before the press.
Training overhead pressing with an Axle Bar is a great way to develop wrist strength and pressing power simultaneously.
