Pinch Blocks

Pinch blocks are one of the best tools for developing pinch grip strength, targeting the thumb, fingers, and overall hand control. They provide a versatile and effective challenge, helping to build thumb strength, finger endurance, and overall grip strength.

Selecting the correct width of Pinch Blocks depends on your specific goals and hand size. Generally people with larger hands will struggle on narrower pinch, whilst bigger hands will generally be better with wider pinch blocks.

OUR TOP PICKS

Selecting the best width of Pinch Block really depends on your current goals and preferred style, if you're unsure we always say go in the middle with..

60mm Pinch Block - The go to Pinch Block, a staple amongst various competitions Worldwide and one of the fairest widths, testing both big and small hands.

We saw this Pinch Block feature in at least 1 event over the last 3 years and it will continue to feature in many years to come.

Narrow Pinch Block - As much as it pains me to write this one (I'm terrible at lifting it), the Narrow Pinch Block has had a rise to fame at the beginning of 2025 seeing it become a lot more popular due to its techincal difficulty and enhanced new look / feel.

The Narrow Pinch Block not only tests out fingers and thumbs but wrist too (a lot more so than the other pinch blocks). A great challenging lift we will be seeing a lot more of in the years to come.

PINCH FAQ

The most widely used competition width is 60mm; it’s the most hand friendly and the best all-rounder for general training. For wide pinch work, 80mm is a strong choice, especially if you have larger hands or you’re targeting blob lifts or thumb overload. Anything wider than this moves into true wide pinch territory, placing greater demand on the wrist and thumbs, which suits advanced lifters building specific strength.

Size at a glance

60mm — Most popular, versatile, great for PR singles, holds, and volume.

80mm — Wide pinch focus, ideal for blobs and thumb overload, suits larger hands.

Wider — Specialised wide pinch, heavier wrist/thumb strain, advanced progression.

GripLock™ Texture is a custom, ultra-grippy paint system designed for feel and durability. It holds chalk well and seasons over time to that perfect crust, helping to maximise performance.

We recommend using a light dusting of chalk on both your hands and grip tool, when used over time this will eventually develop the perfect seasoned feel and texture.

All equipment manufactured by Gods Of Grip is cleared for competition. You can view the complete list of competition lifts & rules here.

'Essential' equipment is not cleared for competition use.

We would usually recommend training pinch 1-2 times per week making sure to rotate between low / high rep sets and holds for time.

For more specific training tips & advice check out our Grip Academy.

Chalk - We strongly recommend not using liquid chalk with any of our grip tools, they are specifically desinged to be used with powdered chalk, liquid chalk will sit in GripLock™ texture and make the blocks feel worse.

Towelling - We do recommend brushing any excess chalk off with a towel frequently, this will allow for a consistent build up over time.

Brushing - You can brush the block to remove any excess or build up, this is not allowed mid competition (before or after is fine).

GripLock™ Texture - Our speciality paint is designed to season gradually over time through use, any paint chips are fine, these will just get filled with chalk / rust over time and provide you with an excellent textured feel.
